Bible Reading: Psalm 1; 1 Peter 3:8-14.
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” – Psalm 1:2 (KJV)
Learning God’s word can be done in five progressive steps. First is hearing the word of God. This could be by listening to audio bible and messages of men and women of God. The next step is to read the word of God. The bible enjoined Kings to read it everyday. Deuteronomy 17:19 (KJV): “And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:” Since Christians are kings, then we should ensure daily reading as commanded.
The third step is to study the bible. 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) says: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”. This involves recording every fresh revelation you receive while you are busy slowly reading the word of God. It entails asking and answering questions while reading. It also encompasses doing comparative analysis to get fresh revelations from the passage being studied. Studying is done with the objective of understanding, retaining and utilizing the information garnered from the passage. The next step is memorizing some verses, passages or chapters of the bible. The more of God’s word you memorise, the more you are able to renew your mind. What you memorise can also be recalled to defeat the enemy during temptations and attack. Psalm 119:11 (KJV) says: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” So the memorised passages also help you to guard against sin. The last step is meditating on the word. Psalm 1:2 (KJV) says: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord ; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”
Meditation is a process of taking out some time to think upon a particular verse or passage asking questions. It entails opening up your mind to the Holy Spirit for His guidance. There should be no distraction. At the initial stage of the meditation your mind may wonder on some other issues. Just remain concentrated on the verse or passage, turning it over in your mind and asking Holy Spirit to shed light on it to you. In the process, the Lord could reveal many things to you; you can receive secrets of breakthrough, success, enduring peace and lasting joy. No wonder the bible says in Joshua 1:8 (KJV): “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
You can start meditating for fifteen, thirty or sixty minutes. As you grow in the process you can stay meditating for hours. You may not get answers that you want everytime you meditate but note that meditation is a way of getting breakthroughs and ideas that can take you to greater heights both materially and spiritually. It helps you to gain direct access to the throne of God.
