Topic: When my Strength fails

Bible Reading: Psalm 70-72; Romans 4.

Memory Verse: “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.” Psalm 71:9 (KJV).

David was a strong soldier and king. He did not only kill Goliath but fought and won many wars. But then came a day in his life when he went to war as usual against the Philistines, the Bible says in 2 Samuel 21:15-16 (KJV), “Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. [16] And Ishbi–benob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.” His strength failed and his enemy thought he had been killed but then God came to his rescue.

No Matter how strong you may be, there will come a time that your strength will fail. When that happens, you need to rely on God who can strengthen you. But you need to have cultivated a relationship with God before then for Him to come to your aid when the need arises. Thus, in the case of David, God sent a member of his army to him at the time his strength failed and that one killed David’s enemy and rescued him from death that day! The Bible says in 2 Samuel 21:17 (KJV), “But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.”

Certainly, David did not know his strength will fail that day, otherwise he would not have gone to the battlefield. So you may not know when your strength will fail you and that’s why you need to cultivate a relationship with someone who knows all things including when your strength may fail! This is why David said in Psalm 71:9 (KJV), “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.”

David expressed in this Psalm that strength will fail in old age but it can also fail even when one is still very young. It could be due to illness, or unexpected event. Besides, strength is not only physical; it may be emotional, material, intellectual or spiritual among others! In order to mitigate against the risk of strength failure, you need to strengthen your relationship with God who will step in anytime your strength fails and He can re-energize you, provide a substitute or allow you to go through the failure for greater purpose ahead! This is why you should remain in continuous fellowship with God so that He can come to your aid when your strength fails!

Prayer point: Father, please forsake me not when my strength fails in Jesus name.
