TOPIC: TRAIN TO HEAR GOD’s VOICE
Bible Reading: 2 Chronicles 7-9; John 13:1-17
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27 (KJV)
Just as our physical bodies and minds can be developed through exercise and learning, our spirits can also be trained to become more sensitive to spiritual realities and to recognize God’s voice. Jesus makes it clear in our text that His sheep hear His voice, know Him, and follow Him. As believers, hearing from God is not a privilege reserved for a few; it is part of our relationship with Him.
One of the primary ways to develop your spirit is by consistently meditating on God’s Word. Make it a daily habit to read, study, and reflect on the Scriptures. Listen to sound teachings and sermons that strengthen your faith. God’s Word is spiritual nourishment for your inner man. Jeremiah said, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” Jeremiah 15:16 (KJV). As you meditate on God’s Word, your spirit becomes more attuned to the leading of the Holy Ghost. Since the Holy Spirit and the Word of God are always in agreement, He will never lead you contrary to the Scriptures.
Another way to train your spirit to hear God is by maintaining an awareness of His presence through worship. Develop the habit of worshipping God both privately and corporately. Sing spiritual songs and spend time adoring Him. Worship creates an atmosphere where your heart becomes sensitive to the voice of God. Acts 13:2 (KJV) says, “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said…” The Holy Spirit spoke while they were worshipping and seeking God’s direction. This reminds us of the importance of setting aside quiet moments each day to wait before the Lord.
In addition, cultivate the practice of praying in the Holy Ghost. Praying in tongues is a powerful means of building up your spirit and strengthening your fellowship with God. The Apostle Paul wrote, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God.” 1 Corinthians 14:2 (KJV). As you spend time praying in the Spirit, you become more sensitive to God’s guidance, receive divine insights, and position yourself to hear His instructions more clearly.
Psalm 25:14 (KJV) says, “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.” God desires to reveal His heart and His plans to those who seek Him diligently. As you consistently meditate on His Word, worship Him, and pray in the Holy Ghost, your spirit will become increasingly responsive to His voice.
As you exercise yourself in these spiritual disciplines, your spirit will remain tuned to God’s frequency, and you will grow in your ability to hear and follow His leading every day.
Prayer: Father, open my ears to hear your voice, help me to grow in Your Word and be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
