TOPIC: THE FAVOUR OF GOD
Bible Reading: Jeremiah 1–2; 2 Thessalonians 2
“And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south.” — Deuteronomy 33:23 (KJV)
The favour of God is an advantage that makes a difference in our lives! When the Bible speaks of God’s favour, it means more than people being kind or friendly towards us. God’s favour speaks of His grace, help, and blessing at work in our lives, opening doors and enabling us to fulfil His purpose. The Psalmist declares, “For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” Psalm 5:12 (KJV). God’s favour surrounds His people like a shield, reminding us of His gracious care and faithfulness. We do not earn this favour through our own efforts; we receive it by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 5:2 (KJV) says that “we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand”. Through Jesus and His finished work, we have access to God’s grace and can confidently trust Him to guide and sustain us.
Genesis 4:4 (KJV) states: “And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.” This verse highlights Abel’s offering and God’s respect for it, contrasting with Cain’s offering which was not accepted in the same way. This account reminds us that God considers both the worshipper and the offering brought before Him. Abel’s offering is not explicitly described as a direct prophecy of Christ, but it points us towards the importance of approaching God in faith. Today, our confidence in God’s acceptance rests not in our personal achievements or sacrifices, but in Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us. God’s favour does not mean that we will never encounter opposition or that everyone will celebrate our progress. Abel faced jealousy and was killed by his brother, yet his faith remains a testimony (Hebrews 11:4). Likewise, we may experience challenges, envy, or unjust treatment, but we can continue to trust God’s wisdom, protection, and ultimate justice. Our security is found in His grace, not in the approval of people
Deuteronomy 33:23 declares that Naphtali was satisfied with favour and blessed by the Lord, and then commands him to possess his territory. In the same way, we should approach our God-given responsibilities and opportunities with faith, diligence, and confidence in God’s grace. You may have experienced repeated struggles in pursuing your goals, but your past difficulties do not have to define your future. Consider Mordecai in the book of Esther: Haman plotted his destruction, yet his scheme ultimately led to his own downfall, while Mordecai was honoured (Esther 7:10; 8:15). This account reminds us that God can overturn unjust plans and bring about deliverance in ways we may not anticipate. Therefore, do not allow fear or past setbacks to keep you from moving forward. Trust God’s favour, seek His direction, and take wise steps towards the responsibilities and opportunities He has placed before you. In Christ, you stand in God’s grace; walk in that confidence, remain faithful, and give Him the glory for every victory.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your grace and favour through Jesus Christ.
