TOPIC: IT BEGINS WITH THE MIND
Bible Reading: Jeremiah 5–6; 1 Timothy 1
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
Life is influenced by the way we think. Our thoughts shape our attitudes, decisions, words, and actions, which eventually affect the course of our lives. In Scripture, the word ‘heart’ often refers to the inner person, including our thoughts, intentions, and desires. This is why Proverbs 4:23 (KJV) instructs us to guard our hearts diligently, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Many Christians have not fully understood the importance of their thought life and therefore allow their minds to wander without direction. Some even believe they have no control over the thoughts that come to them. However, 2 Corinthians 10:5 teaches us to bring “into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”. We may not always control the thoughts that initially enter our minds, but we can learn to examine them, reject those that contradict God’s truth, and choose what we will continue to dwell upon. As the familiar illustration suggests, we may not be able to stop every bird from flying over our heads, but we can prevent it from settling there and building a nest.
Our thoughts can be influenced by the information we receive, our environment, our experiences, and the circumstances we encounter. Therefore, we must be intentional about what we allow to shape our thinking. Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us that God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours. Through His Word, God reveals His wisdom and teaches us to think in ways that align with His truth. First Corinthians 2:16 declares that “we have the mind of Christ”, reminding us that, through the Holy Spirit, we can grow in our understanding of God’s purposes and learn to view life from a biblical perspective. Not every thought that comes to mind is true, helpful, or worthy of acceptance. Rather than allowing fear, resentment, discouragement, or worldly assumptions to dominate our thinking, we should test our thoughts against Scripture and choose to focus on what is true and pleasing to God. The quality of our thinking matters because it influences how we respond to life’s challenges and how we live out our faith.
The way to fill your mind with God’s thoughts is through His Word. In Isaiah 55:10–11, (KJV), “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: [11] So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” God compares His Word to rain and snow that water the earth, causing it to bring forth seed and bread. He then declares that His Word will not return unto Him void, but will accomplish His purpose. Just as a farmer must plant good seed and allow it time to grow before enjoying the harvest, we must continually sow the seed of God’s Word into our hearts through reading, studying, meditating, and acting upon it. Your mind is like a field: what you repeatedly allow to take root can influence the fruit you produce. Therefore, do not leave your thought life unattended. Deliberately fill your mind with Scripture, surround yourself with godly influences, and practise thinking about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report as admonished in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” As God’s Word renews your mind, your choices and responses will increasingly reflect His wisdom. Guard your heart, cultivate the right thoughts, and allow the truth of God’s Word to shape the life you live in Christ Jesus.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your Word, which gives me wisdom and guides my thoughts. Renew my mind through the Holy Spirit and teach me to focus on what is true and pleasing to You.
