“But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young that were brought up with him, that stood before him” – 2 Chron.10:8
The young king Rehoboam forsook the good counsel of the elders who sat before his father. These were elders who had witnessed the heaven burden the father placed on the people all through the building of the temple and the king’s palace. He was insensitive to the people’s plight and concern. Because of his insensitivity which stems from his youthful arrogance, Rehoboam permitted the youth of the kingdom to cause him to make one of the greatest mistake a ruler ever made. His choice of action resulted in a two hundred and sixty years of separation of the kingdom during which bitter wars were fought, and loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. Much bitterness, hatred, jealousy and idolatry also resulted. Choices made today, like the case of Rehoboam, has very impactful future implication. The bible says that “The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead – Prov. 21:16(KJV).
It is very important that we think through before taking a choice of action. We are responsible for our choices and what it holds. Choices are made every seconds on earth. Whether they be positive or negative is determined by the aftermath.
We all can learn from the mistake of the young king in order to avoid being insensitive and hasty. This will lead us to the question of the choice of action we have taken with respect to the salvation of our soul. Whom have you chosen to serve? Is it the god of money or the living God? Joshua 24:15(KJV) “And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve;…” The choice of you accepting Christ into your life or to continue to serve the god of money, the deities in your place has become imperative. There is no sitting on the fence in this matter. We must as a matter of urgency be decisive about whom we will hand over our entire life to. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. – John 3:16(KJV) The bible admonished us to “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them” Eccl. 12:1(KJV).
Prayer: Father, guide me in all my ways as I take decisions daily
