Bible Reading: Psalm 44, Revelation: 3: 12-22
“For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. In God we boast all day long, praise thy name forever” – Psalm 44: 6-8(KJV).
Who do you trust? Upon whom do you put your confidence? What power do you rely in your boasting? What is that confidence that you walk around with? What is the underlying power that has necessitated your arrogant posture? Many go about putting their trust and confidence in charms prepared by mortal men, who may sleep and not wake up the next day. Some boast by the altar of the occult power they belong to. Some trust their instrument of war, some trust their strength and intellectual capacity. In our reading of today the Psalmist again said that he will not trust his bow nor depend on his sword to save him. His total and dependable trust is on God of whom he boast all they long. This is a statement of someone who worked with God and has seen God in operation. This is the saying of a man who has witnessed God’s glorious deliverance. See one of the historic boast of David when he was a mere youth; “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou has defied”– 1 Samuel 17:45(KJV). Please notice that he mentioned the three things that the Philistine (Goliath) trusted in; his sword, spear and shield including his strength and military expertise. Though young and untrained in the art of war, David never mentioned his sling (catapult), but boasted in the name and the power of his God.
Again hear the Psalmist say: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God” – Psalm 20:7(KJV). Trust and confidence go together. When you have implicit confidence on someone’s ability in certain areas, you tend to trust him to perform in those areas of your confidence. Boast is another dimension of praise and it is a product confidence and trust. Why should you trust in a mere mortal man by relying on the charms he prepared for you? That native or witch doctor you depend on, does not even know how his end will be. It is a matter of the blind leading the blind. There are basis for our confidence, trust and boast in our God, among which are the following:-
- God’s Might. We put our trust and confidence in God because He is the custodian of all might. God addressing Abraham in Genesis 17:1 introduced Himself as the Almighty God, which connotes owner of all might.
- God’s Power. Psalm 62:11(KJV) “God hath spoken once: twice have I heard this; that power belongeth to God” God is omni-potent. Power belongs to him. He is the custodian of power.
- God’s Wisdom. Romans 11:33(KJV), “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgement. And his ways past finding out” God’s are deeply mysterious, by His wisdom he framed and created the heavens and the earth and all that is therein.
- God’s Personality. We cannot totally comprehend who God is. Apostle Paul has this to say of his personality “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
- God’s Integrity. God cannot lie. It is absolutely impossible for God to lie. Numbers 23:1&(KJV). “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good”
With all the above I shall continue to trust and boast in my God. How about you?
Prayer: Father, no matter the situation and circumstances, my trust is in you.
