Bible Reading: Psalm 91:1 – 16
“I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust” – Psalm 91:2(KJV)
Growing up, I still vividly remember an experience my mum shared with me. She was barely young growing up in the outskirts of her village. The whole village woke up one morning to behold the corpse of the strongest and most reliable medicine man. His unforeseen death threw the whole village into a state of weeping. The real situation, however, was that the villagers were not actually weeping because the man was no more but because their source of refuge and fortress had been taken away.
The Psalmist cries out! “I will say of the Lord you are my refuge, my fortress, My God in whom I trust”. The question now is: ‘what is the source of your safety?’ where is your fortress? Some have their refuge and fortress in systems, connections, social class, materials or even fellow man. Proverbs 18:10 says: ‘the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous runneth into it and is safe. Psalm 91 gives an all-round protection for those who seek and obtain their refuge in God alone. When God is your fortress, you are safe from all harms and alarms.
Do you realize that there is no safe place in the world? Not even the hands of a fellow man are immune from dangers. God is our refuge and fortress; ever dependable and ever sure. As Martin Luther wrote:
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing
A shelter He is amidst the storm, of mortal ills prevailing
For still our Ancient foe, doth seek to work us woe
His craft and power are great, And armed with cruel hate
On earth is not his equal
As you abide under the shadows of the wings of the almighty, may you experience safety on every side in Jesus name!
Prayer: Eternal Father, help me to always look up to you for my safety no matter the situation in Jesus name
