Bible Reading: Proverbs 15: 1-33
“A fool despises his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent” – Proverbs 15:5(KJV)
There are many who could have attained greater heights in life but for their stubbornness in taking in the instructions of their parents. The Scripture admonishes us, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise” – Eph. 6:1-2(KJV). Our society is witnessing an increasing level of moral decadence as many parents are also failing in their responsibility for sound and discipline upbringing of their children
I was privileged to witness an incidence sometimes ago when a young man visited female twins when their parents were away. Upon their return, the father got the wind of the development, enquiry was made and when confirmed appropriate disciplinary action was taken. Their father’s action has paid off today as the twins are undergraduates in a private university focussed on their studies. This feat possibly could not have been achieved if the father did not rise to the occasion. Parents should know that children reflects what they received from their parents.
However, we know quite well that while we have many parents who are lackadaisical in cultivating values to their ward, we have a lot of parents who are also diligent in correcting their children. However, we know that some children, when exposed to peer influence find it difficult to keep to what they have been taught at home. Most times they abandon parental instruction to follow the bad influence of their peers to their detriment. The Scripture says in Proverbs 15:10(KJV) “Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die”. It should be sunk into the hearts of our children that corrections are meant for their good because it is clearly enshrined in the perfect law of liberty as stated in Proverbs 15:31-33(KJV). “The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility”
Do you want to conquer in life? Then listen to correction coming from your biological and spiritual parents? The correction could also come from your superior or subordinates, it can be from your school teachers as well. Just absorb it with humility and you shall be glad you did.
Prayer: Father, help me to always see that reproof from my parent is for my ultimate good in Jesus name.
