Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes1:1-18
“There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after” – Ecclesiastes 1:11(KJV)
Relevance is seasonal and nothing or no situation endures for life. Aside from the fact that there are records of old for us to fall back upon, the major actors of those events have long returned to meet their Maker. This should then awaken a serious sense of responsibility in us that a time is coming that we shall not be on stage. The proper introduction of the writer of this book shows to us that, he was not a mere man in all ramifications. He was a Preacher, the son of David. He was also a king in Israel (verse 1&12). While he was a king he did many mighty exploits for the establishment of the covenant of God.
This king helps us to see that no generation last forever. It is against this backdrop that each of us should get it right in our pursuit of all that will perish with time. No doubt, wisdom is needed to make great things out of this passing world (verse13). It is important also to know that all that man achieve in life come with labour (verse 8). No laziness is allowed in the pursuit of relevance. The wise preacher raised a serious question which is begging for answer from all serious minded people, “Is there a thing of which it can be said, see, this is new? It has already been, in the vast ages of time [recorded or unrecorded] which were before us” – v.10 (Amp).
We will be doing good to ourselves if we hold on to the counsel of this old time preacher. God gave him wisdom than all the people in Israel, but as he was rounding off his life he possibly noticed some emptiness that he has given his life pursuing, thus he exclaimed: “I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge and I gave my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit” – Ecclesiastes 1:16-17(KJV). When your relevance expires, what shall your remark be? While you are still relevant and energetic, do something which when you look back, you have reason to give thanks to God.
Prayer: Almighty God, help me not to lose my relevance in you in Jesus name.
