Bible Reading: The Song of Solomon 1:1-17
“
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine” – Songs of Solomon 1:2 (KJV).
The entire scripture speaks of Jesus. This illustration is a typology of the union and relationship of Christ and his bride the church. In a deeper sense, it talks of the communion or fellowship between Christ and the church.
Wine intoxicates, it has a strong influence on the person that drinks it; it brings excitement and happiness. Wine makes one to feel high and to temporarily forget ones pains and sorrow. But the limitations of wine is that its influence is soon short-lived. Its influence does not last and it could lead to some foolish actions that could ultimately leave one worse than before. Wine lacks the power to change ones situation or ones life. It only delays or momentarily suspends the pains giving one a false hope. It is a world of illusion, a fool’s paradise since the merriment it brings does not last.
On the contrary, the love of God makes a lasting impression in a person that receives it. It brings lasting joy and peace. It heals the broken hearted and transforms the recipients. The worldly love is mere feeling, conditional and selfish. God’s love is selfless, sacrificial, unconditional and eternal. “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the spirit” – Ephesians 5:18 (KJV). The result of this love or spiritual experience is that the recipient will be filled with joy, peace, and speaking to himself in Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in his heart to the Lord. It results to a life of thanksgiving and grace.
Have you experienced this love of God? He loves us so much that he gave us his only begotten son that anyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. “Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled, but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him” – Psalm 2:12 (KJV). To kiss the son is to respond to his advances of love towards you. He stands at the door knocking, waiting for your obedient response. Today his alms are stretched in love, but one day, they will be stretched in judgment. Today, as you hear his voice, do not harden your heart.
PRAYER: Dear, Lord help me to always respond to your love.
