Bible Reading: Job 41; 1 Pet. 2:17-25
“Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.” – 1 Peter 2:17 (KJV)
Honouring God requires that God should be placed first in everything we do. This is the will of God when the bible states in Matthew 6:33 (KJV): “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” You are expected to put God first in everything that you do. That is what it means to seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness.
Honouring God should not be limited to church or religious activities only. God should be honoured in every area of our lives. We should honour God in our wealth by giving to godly projects, giving the needy in response to God’s word in Proverbs 19:17 (KJV): “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”
We should also honour God with our time, devoting a portion of our time to God by studying his word, fellowshipping with him and generally spending time with him, including preaching the gospel.
Honouring God also involves obeying his command. Whenever we disobey his commands, we are dishonouring him. So we need to study his word to know his commands and to ensure obedience. When the children of Eli were sinning by polluting the sacrifice of God’s people, God punished his household as a consequence. He stated in 1 Samuel 2:30 (KJV): “Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.”
Also honouring God involves honouring the creatures of God. Hence, God admonished us to honour men, which is obeying the ordinances of men as long as it is not contrary to the word of God. Thus, all those above us are to be given their due respect whether in authority in church, home, office, government and school, among others. Hence, God asked us to honour our parents. In Exodus 20:12 (KJV) the word of God says: “honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”
SO HONOURING GOD SHOULD BE IN EVERY AREA OF OUR LIFE.
Prayer: Father, give me the grace to honour you in everything I do.
