Bible Reading: Psalm 88

“O LORD God my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;” – Psalm 88:1-2(KJV)

There are some serious desperate situations that can occur in the life of a man, when it seems you have come to the end of the road. Under such situations, you become a laughing stock to most people around you. Examples abound where men have come to this very tight corner and no help can come from man, instead your fellow man secretly rejoice over your demise. In such situation you soak your pillow with your tears pleading unto the God of heaven to come to your rescue. Most times in Africa we relate such situation as the hands of evil persons, be they witches or occults, which are not always the case.

David had such an experience when the Amalekites invaded their camp while they were absent. Our God is the God of all possibilities and can operate in all situations. We must learn from David’s example and the action he took. The bible says, “Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep” – 1 Samuel 30:4(KJV). This was a very terrible and desperate situation. All their wives and children have been taken captives. The bible said David was greatly distressed and his followers planned to stone him because they were grieved for their sons and wives. However, the bible recorded that David encouraged himself in the LORD his God. While others lost hope and began to plan mischief, it was not so with David, he sought the face of his God. The bible recorded, “And David enquired at the LORD, saying , shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? And he answered him, pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all” – 1 Samuel 30:8(KJV). Under the situation how many of us will believe God when He said pursue for you will surely overtake them and recover all. The bandits came to Ziklag and burnt it down, you do not have an idea of their destination, and God is saying pursue and thou shall surely overtake them and recover all. It seems humanly impossible, but because David had experienced this great God of all possibilities he believed and acted and got victory.

Jehoshaphat also had the same experience in a very desperate situation. Besieged by a mighty horde of armies of the enemy God proffered a solution via praise. Have you ever heard of people going to a battle of guns and arrows armed with nothing but praise? Yet Jehoshaphat and Judah believed their God and got victory of God. In your desperate situation do you pray to God while imagining the dimension of your situation or do you come to God with your faith anchored on His power and ability to bring His word to pass in your life? Under the situation of desperation how you come to God matters. Do you take time to encourage yourself in the LORD by studying His word and what it says concerning your situation or do you stay panicking and defeated not remembering His promises? Remember He is the God of our salvation. The bible says in Romans 8:32(KJV), “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things”.

When we are faced with terrible situations, as Christians our focus should be on God and His eternal promises, not on the size and magnitude of the problem or situation. Our God will surely incline His ear to our prayer when we come before Him presenting His word which are eternal promises that cannot be broken.

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to believe your word more no matter the situation I find myself.
