Bible Reading: Psalm 99
“Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy” – Psalm 99:3 (KJV)
In truth, the name of the LORD is great and terrible. It is great to them that love and fear Him, and it is terrible to the evil forces that fight against righteousness. The name of the LORD is preservative and protective to them that love and honour Him. His name is a defense and bulwark against evil. The book of proverbs 18:10(KJV) says, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” His name is a seal of authority over all things. “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heave, and things in earth, and things under the earth” Philippians 2:9-10(KJV).
The name of the Lord is the power of attorney given to us to exercise divine authority overall areas of life. “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” – Mark 16:17 (KJV). We are victorious in that name. By his name our request to God receives express attention and answer. “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it” – John 14:13-14(KJV). The name of Jesus commands respect and obedience in the kingdom of light and in the kingdom of darkness. It carries the highest authority among angels, among men and among demons. The name represents God’s final authority and seal (Philippians 2: 9-10). When we gather in his name his presence is guaranteed. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” – Matthew 18:20(KJV).
His name is worthy of our praise because by His name have we gotten victory in the battles of life. The name carries destructive potency against the enemies of God’s people. “They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them” – Psalm 118:12(KJV). God’s name evokes fear and destruction and wreaks havoc in the camp of His enemy. The name of the LORD is excellent and glorious.
Using the name of Jesus as God’s power of attorney given to us for dominion and authority over the forces of evil can only happen when we have surrendered to his Lordship. It is only the children of the Highest that can exercise such power and authority. Receive Christ into your life as Lord and Saviour and begin to enjoy the use of such power.
