Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 2
“I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity” – Ecclesiastes 2:1 (kjv)
I have found that many of those in the workforce spend their weeks working while looking forward to the weekend so they can go out and enjoy themselves. Enjoyment becomes an endless pursuit for just about everyone. However, I want to state that there is nothing wrong with having times of enjoyment. As a matter of fact, God has given us things to enjoy. But I want to caution every one of us, any pursuit outside of God will always end up leaving us unfulfilled.
It is only when we are connected closely to our God that we will truly be able to genuinely enjoy all things. There is a law called the law of diminishing returns, that is, after the initial euphoria, the next time will not be as satisfying. We will then keep trying to reach that same pleasure just like the first time. Solomon says that pleasure in itself is vanity; meaning that pleasure alone will not satisfy completely. It will vanish away. Therefore, whatever endeavor we seek to enjoy, we must make sure we pursue it in light of our relationship with the Lord.
