Bible Reading: Job 29; James 2:21-26.
“Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith” – James 2:24 (KJV)
Can a man be justified by works alone? The bible says in James 2:21 (KJV): “Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?” So offering Isaac on the altar was imputed unto Abraham as righteousness. Why?He acted on God’s directive that God wanted him to sacrifice his son (Genesis 22:1-2). So also is Rahab, who provided safety for Joshua and other spies of Israel (Joshua 2:1-4). This was counted for her because she believed in the God of the Israelites that He would save her!
Now we have a situation where some people look out for the welfare of others but do not care about their eternity. In order words, they are quite concerned about the physical needs and neglect the spiritual needs of the people. God has made us a triune being made up of body, soul and spirit. So we are both physical and spiritual being. We cannot take care of one at the expense of the other. The body needs food, physical exercise and rest. Similarly, the spirit needs spiritual food of the word of God, fellowship with God and listening to God for direction. Psalm 32:8 (KJV) says: “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” You will need to listen to God regularly to get his instruction, teaching and guidance.
As human beings, we need both our physical well being and spiritual well being to live a complete life. You therefore need works (physical) and faith ( spiritual) to live a life pleasing to God. That is why it is impossible to please God without faith. Hebrews 11:6 (KJV) says: “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” So one can only be justified by both works and faith and not either of them.
Action Point:
Look out for some needy around you that you can cater for and provide their needs.
