…Spreading the gospel of Christ

WORD MEDITATION: 17/04/2019

Bible Reading: 2 Sam. 1 & 2, Luke 14:1-17.

“For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Luke 14:11( KJV)

The bible enjoins us to humble ourselves so that we may not be humbled by others. It tells us that when you are invited for a wedding, do not sit on the uppermost seat, rather look for a back seat to sit so that the celebrant may not come and ask you to excuse them from the uppermost seat for a more Honourable invitee than yourself. What a principle! This is similar to God’s words in Philippians 2:3 (KJV), “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” All these point to one direction, that we should respect each other irrespective of the person’s position or status. This is not limited to church or even place of work. Rather, it covers all social places as the example given is that of a wedding!

A life of a Christian is that of meekness, where you do not assert your authority always. This is what Jesus did in all his ministry on earth. This is why it was difficult for outsiders to recognize him among his disciples such that Judas Iscariot had to use his kiss to identify him. This is different from what most church leaders do these days. They want to be distinguished and even worshipped in their role as either the head of the church or even the founder! They arrogate to themselves powers that even Jesus did not exert while on earth.

The question is as Christians, how do you treat your peers and even subordinates in your place of work? Do you want to be worshipped, given so much honour while you look down on others? That will not be in line with the word and philosophy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Or are you so concerned about yourself in your place of assignment at the expense of others? How then does Philippians 2:3 play out with you?

We need to recognize that at all times, we will give account of every word of ours and that is what would determine whether we are justified or condemned! ( Matthew 12:36-37). This is why we need to take very careful note of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 14:11 (KJV) “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” We therefore need to humble ourselves to ensure we make heaven.

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to live a life of humility at all times in Jesus name.
