Bible Reading: Ezra 6-8; John 21
“He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto Him, Yes Lord: thou knowest that I love thee, He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.” – John 21:16 (KJV)
Among the disciples of Jesus, Simon Peter is one man who will do anything for Jesus. He walked on water at the beckoning of the master (Matthew 14:28-29). He drew a sword when Jesus was about to be arrested (John 18:10), among others. Yet, Jesus still ask if he loves Him.
Loving Jesus means we obey His commandment and words. And here Peter was told to feed His sheep as a proof of his love. Though Peter is a professional fisherman and needs to work to make a living, yet the master demands that he takes care of His sheep to make a life. He is the number one shepherd and He is delegating that task to us, His disciples. John 20:21b says, “as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”
A shepherd guides the sheep, takes the sheep to where they can get food and provides food for them, protects them from wolves or harm. None of those given to Him was lost (John 17:12).These were what Jesus did and He has given Peter and all His disciples the mandate to make sure that no sheep is lost. Let’s go out there and make disciples and ensure they remain till the end.
