Bible Reading: Ezekiel 24, 25, 26; 1 Peter 2
“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the of the body, ye shall live” – Romans 8:12-13 (KJV)
No one wakes up in a day and decides to live his life in debt no matter the situation. The life that is debt free is a glorious and peaceful one. A debtor is always at the mercy of the creditor. We have an instance in the Bible when the creditor came to seize the sons of a widow whose husband was indebted to some people before his demise. (2 Kings 4:1). From the above, we could say that debt is never to be desired for whatever reason.
However, the above Scripture opens by saying that we are debtors but not to the flesh because if we live after the flesh, death awaits us. This is one of the reasons Apostle Peter while writing to his audience who scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia (1 Peter 1:1) admonished them as “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against your soul” 1 Peter 2:11 (KJV). When we mortify the deeds of the flesh and exalt the matter of the Spirit, it means, we are giving glory to God in the sight of the Gentiles and this shall in turn be of help to them. You should constantly see yourself as a debtor to the Spirit and not to the flesh in this passing world.
Prayer: Jesus Christ, help me to constantly pay my debt to the Spirit as long as I live here on earth.
