Bible Reading: Zechariah 5,6,7,8: Revelation 19
“Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:” – Zechariah 7:9 (KJVS)
Compassion is sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. This comes out of love for others. When you see others having challenges, you look for ways of helping them irrespective of their colour, sex, age or faith. The bible is replete with instances when the Lord showed compassion to others having understood their situation. Thus in Matthew 9:36 (KJVS), “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.” And the Lord moved to heal the sick and diseased among the people. At another instance, when he saw a great multitude, he did not only heal them, but also provided them with food (Matthew 14:14-21).
If people will emulate the Lord Jesus by being compassionate to others, the world would be a better place. As Christians, therefore, you should be compassionate to others in any situation you find yourself. Help the needy to meet their needs. In your place of work, do not oppress your subordinates, support your bosses and show compassion to the needs of the organization you are working for. Be your brothers keeper in every area you find yourself whether at home, work, in the neighbourhood or even at social event. James 1:27 (KJVS) says “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
Visiting the fatherless and helping the needy is an act of compassion which brings you to honour God by supporting some of his creations. Thus the bible records in Zechariah 7:9 (KJVS), “Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:” If we do this, there will be less conflict in the world and the earth will be a better place to live in.
Action Point:
Show unusual compassion to people around you today to honour God and make the earth a better place.
