Bible Reading: Genesis 39,40; Matthew 11
“There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” – Genesis 39:9 (KJV).
The story of Joseph and Portiphar’s wife is one that teaches firsthand what it means to be God-conscious. No matter how fast you do something, you must have thought about it before doing it based on the values and beliefs inside you.
Myles Munroe of blessed memory once said, “Anytime you desire to do a thing, and at the same time hoping nobody finds out, don’t do it, because it may land you in trouble.” As a new born in Christ, whenever I want to do anything I asked myself, what will my Pastor think about this? What will my mentors say about this? I continued that way until I found out the right question to ask in every situation. Jesus, what would you have me do in this situation? Lord, what would you do?
Please note that God sees and knows all your thoughts and imaginations (Psalms 139:24). No wonder Jesus was always not happy with the Pharisees. He sees their evil thoughts and wicked imaginations. King David was aware of these too and prayed in Psalms 19:14 (KJV), “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”
Joseph was more conscious of a God he cannot see but believes in, than a portiphar whom he works for and sees. And that was the difference. He said, “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” What we have believed in, and convicted of, will help us in times like this. David showed us what to do in Psalm 119:11 (KJV), “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Learn to keep God’s word in your heart and it will help you in that hour of need.
Prayer: Father, I receive grace to be conscious of you at all times in Jesus name.
