…Spreading the gospel of Christ

Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 9, 10, 11, Luke 15:17-32.

“And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. [15] And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.” – 2 Samuel 11:14-15 (KJVS).

Cover-up is an attempt to conceal evidence of wrongdoing, error, incompetence or other embarrassing information. In a passive cover-up, information is simply not provided; in an active cover-up, deception is used. The expression is usually applied to people in positions of authority who abuse power to avoid or silence criticism or to deflect guilt of wrongdoing. Perpetrators of a cover-up may be responsible for a misdeed, a breach of trust or duty or a crime.

People go to extreme situations to cover up their misdeeds. This is what happened in the case of David. He saw a married woman taking her bath and invited her home and eventually impregnated her. To cover his traits, he tried to make the woman’s husband sleep with her but the man refused. When that failed, he planned to kill the man as recorded in 2 Samuel 11:14-15 (KJVS), “And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. [15] And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.” The man was eventually killed at war as planned by David.

Several people go to the extreme to cover up their evil deeds. It is however interesting that such deeds will be uncovered, if not here on earth, at the point of judgment. 1 Corinthians 4:5 (KJVS) states, “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.”

Quite a number of us, if not everyone, has at one time or the other tried to coverup our misdeeds particularly before we gave our lives to Christ. That cover-up which was mostly lying in the past, is one of those things that Jesus came to set us free from. So cover-up is not new to man. Other examples in the scripture are: Achan, who tried to cover his stealing in his tent, as well as Ananias and Sapphira who covered up the price they sold their property, and of course, this led to their death!

In all these cases, all the cover ups were exposed! So man’s cover up of his sins will always fail. That’s why David says in Psalm 139:7 (KJVS), “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?” God knows everything and therefore all our attempts to cover up our sin will fail! Only one cover will never fail and that is the blood of Jesus which is why every sin should be exposed to the blood of Jesus by confessing to Him and asking for his mercy because you have his assurance that you will be forgiven!

Action Point: please confess your sins to the Lord Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness.
