Bible Reading: 11 Kings 7, 8, 9; John 1: 1-26
“Then they said one to another, we do not do well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.” – 2 Kings 7:9 (KJV)
The way God moves in the universe is quite different from our perceived standards of men. The position one occupies at times does not determine access to the information that would bring relief into the area of pressure one is facing. Famine to the people of Bible days was not a strange phenomenon. It happened in the days of Abraham, “And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. And there was a famine in the land: …” Gen 12:9-10 (KJV). The same repeated itself in the days of Isaac, “And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham” -Gen 26:1 (KJV).
The same famine besieged the land of Samaria and the situation grew worse to the extent that, “… a donkey’s head sold for two pounds of silver, and a cup of dove’s dung cost about two ounces of silver” – 2 Kings 6:25 (NLT). In the midst of this chaos, the word of the LORD came to His servant to reassure the people that the broken bone shall vibrate once more. Thus, “Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the LORD, Tomorrow about thus time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel in the gate of Samaria” – 2 Kings 7:1 (KJV). When the word came, the close officer of the king despised the word yet the word came true. The lepers who have been banished outside the gate attempted to enter into the gate of the Syrians and were able to gather enough for themselves because the LORD had prepared the table for them. The experience was so sweet that they decided to share it with the porters who in turn relayed the message to the king. The porters did not despise the lepers’ message and the king also did not despise that of the porter.
Friends, Christ being the bread of life has the message which could take you to the location where your provision resides, do not despise the word which may come through any vessel just as it came through the lepers to the king of Samaria.
Prayer: Everlasting Father, help me not to despise Your counsel which may come through any means in Jesus’ name.
