Bible Reading: 1 Chronicles. 22, 23, 24; John 8:30-59
“For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.” – Romans 6:20 (KJV)
There is a particular joy that goes along with freedom. Those who were privileged to be around when the independence was given to our nation, Nigeria, would know that freedom is characterized with joy unspeakable. I can only imagine the euphoria that pervaded the air at the time. This historic event gave birth to the declaration of October 1st as work free day every year.
Jesus Christ had a moment with the Jews when they told him that they have never been in bondage to anyone even though that assertion was not correct because they were under the control of Roman government for quite some time, yet the type of freedom the Master was referring to was not the one they had in mind but the freedom from sin. Actually, Jesus corrected that and confronted them with the reality of the true freedom they had been missing. He thus says: “They replied, ‘we are Abraham’s descendants; we have never been in slavery to any man. What do you mean by saying, “You will become free men”? In very truth I tell you, said Jesus, that everyone who commits sin is a slave” – John 8:33-34 (TNEB)
The Lord was intending that everyone who shall enjoy the real freedom should abandon commitment to sin of any form or shape. Are you free from sin either secret or open? There is need to cry to God as David did: “Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults.” Psalm 19:12 (KJV). This is what Christ was intending to communicate with the Jews for them to have the real freedom. You can have that real freedom today no matter how far you have been enslaved with sin. Turn to him today for the freedom He alone can offer.
Prayer: Lord, I choose to enter into your real freedom today in Jesus name.
