Bible Reading: Psalm 51, 52 & 53; Romans 2
“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions” Psalm 51:1 (KJV)
God’s mercy is one thing we all need. Lamentation 3:22-23 says, “it is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassion fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” He renews His mercies on us every day. What an awesome God!
But that He is merciful is not a licence to continue in sin. David, a man after God’s heart, sinned when he killed a man and committed adultery with the diseased’s wife. He repented when he realized he had not only sinned against man, but also against God. He never committed adultery again. God will always be merciful especially to those who never goes back to their sins.
The mercy of God was what kept the Holy Spirit in David’s life after the sin. Remember, the Holy Spirit can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), because He is holy and can not be with us in unholy acts. David had to plead, ” cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me” Psalm 51:11 (KJV). Whenever we commit a sin and realize it, we need to go to God immediately for mercy and forgiveness.
One of the saddest portion of the scripture was Judges 16:20. Samson awoke out of his sleep in the company of Delilah and said “I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And He wist not that the LORD was departed from him”(vs 20). Continuance in sin, like Samson’s case, will lead us out of God’s presence into the hand of the enemy. May it never be the case in your life.
Ask God for mercy today, for you and all your. Ask also for grace to walk righteously before God, because grace is not given to us so that we can abound in sin. Grace helps us overcome sin.
Prayer: Father, thank You for mercy and grace in my life.
