BIBLE READING: PROVERBS 27, 28, 29; 2CORINTHIANS 10
“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” Proverbs 27:1 (KJV).
It is foolishness and ignorance to boast in life. People often boast because of their position or the wealth they acquire in life. Other reasons people boast or display pride is knowledge or academic attainment. “Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth”1 Cornthians 8:1 (KJV). Many people often become proud and arrogant as a result of the certificate or knowledge they acquire in life, forgetting that God is the source of every good thing in life. “For who maketh thee to differ from another? And what hast thou that thou didst not receive? Now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?” 1 Corinthians 4:7 (KJV). All that we have and all that we could ever have are gifts from God and this does not call for boasting but it should make us humble and thankful.
Another reason people boast is as a result of perceived spirituality. Some feel they are more spiritual or more spiritually endowed than others. This will most times result in boasting and spiritual pride. We must understand that we are saved by grace through faith. There is nothing we have today including the very life we live that is not a gift from God. This understanding should humble us and make us appreciative of God’s blessings. It is more disappointing to boast in the light of our text today knowing that we do not have control of tomorrow. “For we know in part, and we prophesy in part” 1 Corinthians 13:9 (KJV). Boasting is a result of pride.
Pride of face – Beauty
Pride of Race – Racism
Pride of Place – Position
Pride of Possession – Wealth
Pride of Grace – Gifting
PRAYER: Dear Lord, keep me humble and thankful.
