Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 1; 2; Luke 14:1-17.
Memory Verse: “And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.” 2 Samuel 2:1 (KJV)
David was always asking God before going on any war. He knew that once God said it was okay, then, nothing else could stop him except himself. We have a number of lessons to learn from David on this.
First is how often do you ask God whenever you are about taking any decision? Quite a no of Christians have missed their ways because they did not ask God before embarking on a project. When they get stocked, then they turn to God praying for breakthrough. That is why things are difficult for quite a number of Christians.
Before you embark on a project or any key decision, it is important you talk to God and get the right direction. It is not all that glitters that is gold. That is why Matthew 7:7 (KJV) says, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:”
It appeared obvious that since king Saul was dead and God had anointed him to be king, he didn’t need to consult again to take the reign of power but David called on God and he asked him to go. But he went further to ask where? 2 Samuel 2:1 (KJV) states, “And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.” So God gave him specific instruction on where to go. You need to ask and wait for specific instruction on what to do in your circumstance. And God will certainly answer you as long as you are obedient to him.
When you get God’s direction, it’s also important that you follow it to the end no matter how unreasonable it may seem. Imagine when Jehoshaphat went to God to complain about the size of his enemies army and God asked him to appoint singers to lead their army! (2Chronicles 20:1-22.). And of course, he did and God fought for him. So faith in God and obedience to God are key ingredients that underlie the success of any Christian.
Action Point: Ensure you go to God in prayer asking for direction on any major decision you have to take.
