Bible reading: 2 Kings 4,5,6; Luke 24:28-53
“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” Luke 24:45 (KJV)
Understanding is very important in our lives. It helps us intelligently diagnose situations. It separates us from the rest and makes us outstanding in life. It helps us do wonders. The Psalmist was aware of this and asked, “Open thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law” Psalm 119:18 (KJV). No wonder the word says in Proverbs 4:7b (KJV), “with all thy getting get understanding.”
From today’s memory verse, we can see that understanding is a miracle from God. The disciples have been with Jesus for some years, yet they didn’t fully get all He had told them nor really know Him. “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” Luke 24:45 (KJV). No wonder Jesus quickly told Peter after the later revealed who He is that flesh and blood hath not revealed this to you (Matthew 16:17). It is a gift of the Spirit. That Spirit was in Jesus. The same Spirit is in you.
Lack of understanding makes a Christian behave like an unbeliever. Proverbs 21:16 (KJV) says, “The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.” we are alive because we walk in Christ Jesus through whom we now have the Spirit of understanding that makes understanding a reality in our lives.
The Pharisees read the scriptures and were versed in the law. But when He, the scriptures Himself came they could not recognise Him. They lack understanding. So, look up to Jesus, through whom the Spirit of understanding is made available, and confess Him as your Lord and Saviour if you haven’t, and you will see light from God’s word begin to make new meanings and direct the course of you life.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift and miracle of understanding in my life through Your Son, Jesus Christ
