Bible Reading: Genesis 9-11; Matthew 4
“And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. [22] And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.” Matthews 4:21-22 KJV
The importance of any thing of value lies in the sacrifice one can make for such a thing. Value or worth of a thing can be seen in the sacrifice or extent to which one can go for such. There are so many things of value or importance in the world depending on how individuals perceive them. The call to serve God is the most important in life. A call by the creator of the heavens and earth to be his representative here on earth is worth giving up all other things for.
Elisha was at work when the call of God came. Immediately Elijah dropped his mantle on him he only asked for permission to bid his parents goodbye (1 Kings 19:19-21). Today, we still talk of Elisha who followed God from the day he was called to the day he died. Even at his death he was still relevant as his bones brought a dead man back to life (2 Kings 13:21)
The bible tells us of how important the call of God is to Jesus’ disciples, James and John the sons of Zebedee such that they abandoned their fishing business with their father. Matthew 4:22 KJV says, “And they immediately left the ship and their father and followed him.” Prior to that he met two men also by the sea in Matthew 4:18-20 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. [19] And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. [20] And they straightway left their nets, and followed him” The decision to leave all and follow Jesus can only be done by a few.
Today, the cares of the world has made many reject the call while others could not follow till the end. This decision to follow God can only be sustained by the help of the Holy Ghost because following Jesus means being governed by the government of heaven which will always be opposed by the earthly one here with it’s systems, structures, policies, etc making life challenging for the believer. But for those who stayed till the end there is a reward for them both in this life and the life after (Matthew 19:27-29).
Nothing should be more satisfying when you realize that the creator of the whole universe has identified you as one He wants to represent Him on earth. Paul got the call and gave up all he had, including his name for he was Saul prior to the call. Have you heard the call? If yes, are you ready to give up all?
Prayer: Father, by the Holy Ghost, help your children to answer the call like men of old and endue us with the divine energy to remain in it till the end in Jesus name.
