Bible Reading: Genesis 12-14; Matthew 5:1-26
Memory verse: “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake” Matthew 5:11 KJV
So many christians have thrown in the towel or are about to because of the persecution they have faced or are facing. Yet, our Lord, Jesus Christ in His sermon on the mount pointed out that persecution is an important part of our christian life and one we must learn to enjoy. In fact, looking at His life here on earth will make one understand what He meant.
Jesus was the greatest man to ever walk the earth; the signs, wonders and miracles validated the claim of being the Son of God. His teachings and words of wisdom were second to none. Despite all these, the system already in place fought him till the end. Firstly, the religious leaders are not aware of his background. He was not recommended by any big named Pharisee or Sadducee. Yet, whenever He came to the temple to teach multitudes run to Him. Moreso, His views on so many issues were out of this world unlike what the people were used to at that time. All these and more made the the people in charge to go after Him.
Today, in our offices, neighborhood, schools, etc we face persecution because of our belief. As long as you hold on to Jesus’ teachings in your heart and have made up your mind to stick with His ways you will face criticism and persecution even among those you least expected. Sadly, because of the rejection or possible rejection so many christians have compromised their faith with the present evil society of the day. The bible warns us in James 4:4b KJV, “whosoever will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
Our Lord Jesus saw this from afar and told us in our theme verse “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake” Matthew 5:11 (KJV). Blessings here pronounced by Jesus is simply an empowerment to succeed despite the challenges. It means He has given you that which you needed to hang on as He did. The next verse says, Matthew 5:12 KJV, “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”
So, rejoice! Persecution is a proof of your followership of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Heaven already has a great reward for you.
Prayer: Father, I receive the grace to see persecution from Your perspective. Engrace me to enjoy it in whatever form it comes in Jesus name.
