Bible Reading: Proverbs 15-16; 2 Corinthians 1
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; [4] Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (KJV).
Shortly before Jesus Christ left His disciples on earth He made them a promise that they will receive the Holy Spirit who, among other things, will comfort them. This Spirit was not yet poured on the disciples because Jesus was around and He comforted them, yet carrying the burden of suffering for trying to cause a change in the existing order of the day.
The Holy Spirit was poured upon the disciples at Pentecost. Since then, the work of Christ took a new turn as the disciples now speak with boldness, and perform miracles causing many to believe. The authorities of the day made life difficult for the disciples as Christians were targeted and persecuted and made to suffer. Following Christ is like rowing against the tide; many were arrested, imprisoned and even killed. All these were prophesied by Jesus already.
Paul was not exempted from this persecution to the body of Christ. But because of the Spirit in him he was able to survive and comfort others. Hence, the statement he made, “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; [4] Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (KJV). He faced trials and tribulations even amongst those who are supposed to be believers!
Trials, tribulations and persecution are part of our christian journey and we should expect them and even learn to bear them. Jesus listed persecution as one of the things His followers will receive. God is aware of this and allows you pass even through the fire but will protect you. He won’t stop you from going through it. Some of these trials and tribulations sometimes bring out some hidden qualities inside you and ultimately glorifies God.
God still comforts His people today so that they also may comfort others like Paul did.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the Comforter and the comfort He brings in this uncomfortable world.
