“And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all“. – Luke 21:1-3(KJV)
Jesus was at the temple on a certain day observing worshippers as they gave their offerings to God. He saw both the rich and the poor cast their offering and commended a certain poor widow who gave her last “two mites”, her very last! Obviously her attitude impressed God. We can draw a lot of lessons from this event.
Throughout scriptures widows have been known to demonstrate endearing attitudes towards their maker. It is not about how much you give to God, as the rich men did to show off, but the level of sacrifice associated to your giving that makes it acceptable to God. How else can one explain that a poor widow will give more to God than very rich people? The money she gave as offering was her very last; it was very a great sacrifice.
The question is, does your giving to God and to men impress God. Are your offerings rejected by God like the offering of Cain? We must acknowledge that God is not a beggar and therefore deserves the best. In the book of Malachi 1:7-8, God likened some offering to pollutions on his altar. He said we give blind animals to him as worship seeds, the kind we will not dare to give to our governors who are mere men.
It is our love for God that empowers our giving life, knowing that God himself first gave to us because he loves us. He gave us life; he gave us everything good we enjoy today. Whatever we cannot give to God will always be bigger than us. Jehovah is a great king and should be treated so. This way, what we offer God defines the value we attached to Him in our lives
Prayer: Father, release into my life the giving grace so I will always give worthily.
