Bible Reading: Isaiah 45-47; Colossians 3
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” – Colossians 3:17 KJV
As believers we must watch our motives when we make commitment to serve in any capacity. Whether it is in the Church or in our place of work or organization. Our motive for service must first be driven by honour for God and not people’s approval or accolades.
Paul admonished servants in Colossians 3:22-23, “Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” Colossians 3:22-23 (KJV)
The reason people get offended when they serve is because their motive was wrong whether they realize it or not. If your motive is based on people’s approval or the number of accolades you get, then offense is sure to abound but if your motive is ‘God-centered’, you will always be motivated and stirred up like Joseph who was never offended by the treatment he received from his brothers and master in Egypt. The truth is, nobody, either inministry or organization, can ‘use’ you when your motive is truly to serve God.
2 Timothy 2:24 (KJV), “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,”
Time will always reveal intentions and motives. This is the reason you must always consecrate your motives and align them in love when serving God. Ask yourself, “Why am I doing what I’m doing?” If the answer is anything other than bringing glory to God and seeing His Name exalted, then quickly realign it.
Rather than feeling entitled and being resentful, do what Apostle Paul admonish believers in today’s text; for therein lies the reward and the true path to greatness.
Prayer: Father, I receive grace to serve heartily in honour of God in the Name of Jesus.
