Bible Reading: Genesis 9-11; Matthew 4
Memory verse: “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Matthew 4:10 (NKJV)
The word of God is the food our spirit man need to develop to help us take our place in life. Without the word of God in a man he becomes vulnerable to the deception and wiles of the devil and his agents. If Jesus, the word of God could be tempted by the devil, then expect temptation anytime soon.
The devil quoted the word to Jesus who was the word Himself. But the responses he got shows he met the wrong person. He first tested the Lord with an identity based question. Matthew 4:3 (KJV) puts it this way, “And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” You must know who you are or you fall to the devil’s tricks. There is no better way of knowing who you are than studying the word yourself.
If you must overcome in life having the word in your heart is very important or else you may sin against God. Psalms 119:11(KJV) says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Having the word deep in your heart rather than the surface level will help one overcome the temptation to sin.
The devil ought not to have the final say in any encounter with us. Jesus has defeated him already and has passed the victory baton to us. Having the final say means rebuking or commanding the devil to go away based on the depth of the word in you like the master did in Matthew 4:10 (KJV), “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
In this new year make it a duty to build yourself up in the word of God. The advantages are enormous as it puts you on top spiritually.
