Bible Reading: Genesis 44-45; Matthew 14:1-21
Memory verse: “And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick” Matthew 14:14 (KJV)
The God we serve is full of compassion. This characteristic of the Almighty is one He puts in every leader whom He gives and who follows His instructions. God is more interested in solving the problems in the earth today; but He can only do that through leaders with compassion.
The bible says in Isaiah 49:10 (NIV), “They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.” Only a leader with compassion like God can lead a people successfully. As he leads them, hunger and thirst will be a thing of the past. Guidance and direction will he provide also. These are the main challenges in the world today- hunger, thirst and lack of guidance and direction. And the main cause is lack of a compassionate leader.
David was chosen by God to lead Israel. But before then he led his father’s sheep compassionately in the wilderness; he fought and killed a lion and a bear just to protect lambs under his care. God saw his heart and brought him from the bush to the palace. He fought for the peace of his people all through his lifetime as a king leaving Solomon, his son, a kingdom without war to fight.
Compassion goes beyond pity. While both describe the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it, compassion actually involves doing something about the situation. Compassion is of the Spirit, while pity is of the flesh. Jesus, in the memory verse, “was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.” Compassion always goes further to do something about that pitiable state.
The more people with compassion in leadership positions, the better the plight of the people under them.
