Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 17-18; Luke 15: 1-10.
Memory Verse: “And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.” 1 Samuel 17:47 (KJV).
In our Bible reading of today, we saw that Saul made several attempts to kill David because of jealousy ( 1 Samuel 18:8) but God protected him all through. Based on human reasoning, Saul ought to love David and reward him continuously because he killed Goliath who terrorized Israelites for days. But he became jealous when he heard that the women sang that David killed in ten thousands and Saul killed in thousands. However, every attempt that Saul made to kill David failed.
He tried by throwing Javelin at him to nail him to the wall but David dodged it twice. Then he tried to use the Philistines to kill him by asking him to bring the foreskins of a hundred Philistines as his daughter’s dowry but David gave him twice the number without any scratch on his body. He made more attempts at his life subsequently but God protected David.
David was able to escape the evil plans of Saul because of several reasons: Firstly, he had been annointed by God through Samuel (1 Samuel 16:13), so he was carrying the Holy Spirit of God. As a born again child of God, the Holy Spirit came upon you at the point of your Salvation! Secondly, the Spirit of God made David to behave wisely in all his dealings with Saul and others. 1 Samuel 18:14 (KJV) says, “And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.” As long as you are saved, the Spirit of the Lord in you directs you on how you should behave and it is left for you to obey Him. Thirdly, he was diligent and humble even in authority and this endeared him to people of Israel and Judah (1 Samuel 18:16). As born again child of God, you should be diligent and humble being a carrier of the Holy Spirit. Also, David respected constituted authority. Inspite of Saul’s attempts at his life, he refused to mount an offensive against him. Rather, he believed in God and was ready to defend the name of God even at the expense of his life! That is why he was ready to face Goliath in the first instance and he told him in 1 Samuel 17:47 (KJV), “And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.”
God is ready to fight your battle as long as you trust Him like David and obeyed the Holy Spirit in all you do (walk in the Spirit ). As a true disciple of Jesus Christ, God will defend you at all times. Just let Him do it! However, if you are yet to surrender to Jesus Christ, He cannot fight your battle. You need to repent and accept Him as your Lord and Saviour before He takes on your battle.
Action Point: What challenges are you facing? Hand it over to God and do as the Holy Spirit leads you.
