Bible reading: 1 Kings 14-15; John 1:1-28
Memory verse: “Arise thou therefore, get thee to thine own house: and when they feet enter into the city, the child shall die” 1 Kings 14:12 (KJV)
The above verdict was given by Ahijah, the same prophet who prophesied that Jeroboam, a servant of Solomon, will become king taking a large part of the Kingdom off the house of David because of the sins of King Solomon. The verdict to Jeroboam’s wife was a heavy sentence of death to their sick child because of Jeroboam’s sins. Why would God give such heavy sentence on an innocent child?
God is a God of justice and judgement. Psalms 89:14 (KJV) says, “Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.” It was God who gave Jeroboam the ten tribes of Israel, yet as soon as he got on the throne he forgot the LORD and went after other gods. He, infact, moulded two calves of gold and made the people to worship them! (1Kings 12:26-30). This, especially, brought a curse on him and his household forever thereby corrupting anything or person that may have come out of his loins. The verdict given by Ahijah was even the mildest because the child was the only one that was properly buried at death (1 Kings 14:18).
What legacy are you leaving for your children and children’s children? David left a good legacy for Solomon such that Solomon enjoyed peace all through his time as promised by God because of his father David. But Solomon on his part, did not follow God fully like David his father but followed his wives to worship other gods. He ended up bringing problems upon Rehoboam his son.
Be mindful of whatever you do today. Your actions and inactions have consequences on you and generations to come. Many today are battling with issues they knew nothing about but inherited because of their bloodline. What kind of tomorrow do you forsee for your children? Start living the life that will bring about such tomorrow for them today. Hold on to God forever; worship Him and follow His commands to the fullest.
Action Plan: Please use this week to meditate on the kind of future you desire for your children and children’s children and ask God for directions on how to go about laying the foundation.
