“How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?” – John 5:44(KJV)
Honour is defined as moral integrity, the esteem accorded to virtue or talent or conventional respect for a person of high rank or public distinction or for a worthy symbol or an award or distinction. To give Honour therefore means to make a show of respect or reverence for something or someone.
Honour originates in our hearts and refers to the value we personally place on something or someone. What others overlook may be highly valued by someone else and therefore honoured. We honour other people to the degree that we consider their position and contributions significant. We are commanded to honor people because of their position, not their performance. We are commanded to honor our fathers and mothers in Deuteronomy 5:16(KJV) …Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee”.
Some people do wrong things because they want men to honour them. This is what lead some people to steal and take what does not belong to them or even join the wrong associations. That in itself is a reflection of the society. We have misplaced our priority; we now honour people because of their achievement rather than their integrity or moral value. But the word of The Lord is quite clear: In John 5:44(KJV), the bible says …”How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?”
When we seek honour from men, we do the wrong things but when we focus on God and seek only his honour, we will be guided by his word.
Prayer: Father, help me to focus on you, my God for honour and not on men.
