Bible Reading: Proverbs 5-6; 1 Corinthians 14:1-20
Memory verse: “The LORD is good, a strong tower in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him” Nahum 1:7 (KJV)
Trust is what truly brings a man into rest with God. Words heard don’t automatically bring trust; but rather words that tries you is what brings you into trust with God. The same word heard can bring faith to a person and at the same time could try another into trust. The word tries us to determine our trust in Gods promises, ways and timing. Examples abound of men who followed God from faith and trusted in Him and became examples for us today.
Abraham, widely known as the father of faith, walked with God into trust. Faith made him leave his father’s house, not knowing where God was taking him (Genesis 12). He followed God faithfully until the point where he does not need to understand the words God told him before carrying them out. He waited till the appointed time to get a son from God at the age of one hundred and even attempted to sacrifice his only, trusting God to bring him back.
Trust kept Joseph through his ordeal in the land of Egypt till he got to the throne. He dreamt a dream when he was a kid and kept the dream in his heart. However, the events that followed shortly after that were opposite what he saw in the dream. First, he found himself as a slave in a foreign land and then ended up in prison. He trusted God by being aware of his situation but not focusing on them making him a very likeable and respectable person in the prison. At the appointed time, his good deeds and gift with the help of God made the dream God showed him come true.
David was another man who the word of God came to through prophet Samuel that he would be king (1 Samuel 16:13). in fact, he was anointed as king of Israel at his teenage years but took more than ten years to get to the throne. He believed and trusted God so much he refused to cut corners to get to the throne. Twice he had the life of King Saul, his adversary who was bent on killing him, in his hands but refused, trusting God to protect him and bring him to the throne.
These examples are proofs that God knows and rewards those that trust in Him. But you must let his word try you into that trust that brings you into rest.
Prayer: Father, open my heart to take in your word and engrace me with the patience needed to grow into trust through your word.
