Bible Reading: Genesis 6-8; Matthew 3
Memory verse: “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” Genesis 6:5 (KJV)
The heart is the most important part of man. It is the part God sees in man that no other man can see. It is the part where everything we think and do emanate from. Jesus says about the heart, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blaspemies” Matthew 15:19 (KJV). The heart is the person.
It is through the heart God connects and communicates with His children. Those with defiled hearts before God can hardly connect to Him. 1 Samuel16.7 (KJV), “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” Eliab was rejected because of the state of his heart. A king also did what was right but was rejected because it was not done with a perfect heart.
But David was accepted by God. According to Prophet Samuel, David was a man after God’s heart (1 Samuel 13:14). But why does God reject people because of their heart?
From the account in Noah’s days it is evident that a heart that continually seeks to do evil rather than please the LORD is as good as dead. Remember, we say the heart is the person because everything the person does comes from there. Genesis 6:5 (KJV) says, “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” A heart that is inclined towards evil is gone. Their heart became naturally tended towards evil all the time. This is spiritual heart failure. Sadly, this state of the heart will only reproduce its kind. Hence, the violence and wickedness in the earth at that time. For this reason God sent a flood to wipe out the wicked generation in Noah’s day except him and his family.
God said in Jeremiah 17:10 (KJV), “I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” That’s why the Bible advises us to “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” Proverbs 4:23 (KJV). God is looking for a Perfect heart. A Perfect heart is one that seeks God continually even when it falls or makes mistakes. As long as you make it a duty to continually seek God your heart will be right with Him and like Noah, you will find grace in the eyes of God.
Seeking God is the cure for spiritual heart failure. It is a risk to ignore God totally as this can lead to reprobacy and heart failure eventually leading to destruction.
Prayer: Father, I ask for grace to continually seek you for the rest of my life and keep my love for You in the imagination of the thoughts of my heart in Jesus name.
