TOPIC: UNDERSTANDING IS A MIRACLE
Bible Reading: 1 Kings 12-13; Luke 24:36-53
Memory verse: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” Proverb 4:7 (KJV)
While at the university in my second year, a lecturer took us on a topic in a particular course. As he lectured, he could tell from the faces of majority of the students that they were not comprehending. But to me, the whole thing was okay. When he asked us to signify by raising up our hands if we understood what he has said so far, the whole class raised their hands except me. When called out to explain, I did explain to the admiration of my lecturer.
In my class then, I was not one of the top guys in the class academically. But that day, God opened my eyes to the importance of understanding. Understanding is like a miracle! It helps you to become aware of the situation and points to you what and what to connect. It gives you insight into a situation. It makes life easy for you. No wonder we were advised in Proverb 4:7b (KJV), “….and with all thy getting get understanding.”
Understanding is God showing you what He is saying and what He wants you to do. But wisdom is what makes you do them. In today’s bible reading, the disciples have heard so many words from Jesus when he was alive but needed him to open their understanding to connect the words. Luke 24:45 (KJV) says, “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.” Without understanding from God the scriptures will be like a story book.
King Solomon was given an understanding heart from God Himself. He could speak on anything because he saw things the way God sees them. However, his understanding deteriorated when he started disobeying God by worshipping false gods with his wives. This was the reason why his kingdom was divided into twelve parts, and adversaries were raised to disturb him and his heir which took over from him.
To keep your understanding pure and good, Psalm 111:10 (KJV) tells us, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments:” Ask God for a understanding heart today in all things.
Action Point: Take a look at all areas of your life and ask for insight from the LORD in areas where you are falling short of His understanding.
