TOPIC: YOUR ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES
Bible Reading: 1 Kings 21-22; John 3:1-21
Memory verse: “Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? Because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house” 1 Kings 21:29 (KJV)
It is surprising each time I remember that every action we take must have first been thought of before carried out. Yet in the event of carrying out some of these actions the likely consequences are nearly always never put into consideration. Every action has its own consequences. Some of these consequences go on to affect generations unborn.
David’s actions brought a mixture of sad and good news for his children. When he killed Uriah and married Bathsheba, a curse came upon his home, “Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou has despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.” 2 Samuel 12:10 (KJV). Shortly after this pronouncement, the child of Bathsheba died. Moreso, David’s son , Amnon, raped his own sister (Tamar), causing Tamar’s brother (Absalom) to kill the rapist, Amnon, his half-brother. Because of his heart for God, however, God chose Solomon his son to reign after him in peace.
In today’s memory verse, King Ahab’s lust for the property of another man plus his silence when his wife told him he could now take over the property, not minding what happened to Naboath, brought him a curse (1 Kings 21:22-24). Ahab, heard of the curse upon him for his actions and humbled himself before God. However, his humility only saved him from punishment, but not his sons and Israel as God said, “Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? Because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house” 1 Kings 21:29 (KJV).
Abraham served and obeyed God till the end. This earned him a sworn blessing from God. Genesis 22:17-18 (KJV) tells us, “That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy see shall possess the gate of his enemies [18] And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou has obeyed my voice.” Abraham kept blessings for his unborn seed through his faith and obedience in God.
One of the reasons Christ came and died is for a fresh start for each and every man. However, the consequences of your actions today goes beyond you; it will impact on your seed. So be mindful of your thoughts and actions and endeavour to bring a sworn blessing upon them like Abraham did.
Action Plan: Go over all your actions and behaviours in your place of worship, work and family and make sure you are not doing anything that will provoke God to anger.
