TOPIC: THE COVENANT IS THE ANSWER
“Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:” – Hebrews 6:17 (KJV)
Have you ever been in that place where you wonder how your visions, dreams, and everything God has said to you will ever come to pass? God has an answer that can and will erase all of your fears and doubts if you are ever tempted to doubt. Our text says God’s way of assuring us that His Word is sure to come to pass is by an oath. The word oath in this verse means a sacred restraint which also means a covenant.
You see, Abraham also had fears when God spoke to Him about possessing the land of Canaan. It looked like an impossible thing despite the fact God had pronounced the blessing over him. In Genesis 15:8 Abraham asked God, “… Lord GOD, WHEREBY shall I know that I shall inherit it?”Abraham’s question did not upset God; rather God was willing to prove His commitment to bringing His Word to pass in Abraham’s life and He did by getting into a blood covenant with him. He reassured Abraham’s faith by cutting a covenant of blood with him. Genesis 15:9-13 says, “And He (God) said unto him, Take me a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another:” By laying each piece of the halved animals against each other, he created a walk way of blood.
In Genesis 15:12-18, we see that God walked through that pool of blood to establish a covenant with Abraham. God’s covenant with Abraham was not because He was afraid of keeping His Word and as such needed a ‘sacred restraint’ rather the covenant was to reassure Abraham’s faith because the only way out of a blood covenant is death. God was saying to Abraham, “I’ll cease to be God if My Words do not come to pass in your life.” (Hebrew 6:16-18). Once an agreement can be confirmed in a covenant, it means it cannot be negated (Galatians 3:15).
While God walked through the way of blood, the bible says in Genesis 15:12, “… a DEEP SLEEP fell upon Abram…” This is a picture of total rest because God entered the covenant on behalf of Abraham. Abraham was a sleeping partner.
Like Abraham, your part in God’s covenant is to sleep (in absolute trust and faith) and allow God to bring His Word to pass. Every Word of scripture is backed up with the blood of Jesus and if you hold on and you are led by His Spirit, it cannot fail.
Whenever those thoughts of doubt come to you again, remember: “God has given you ‘a ROCK-SOLID (immutable) guarantee’ through THE BLOOD COVENANT” (Hebrews 6:17).
Prayer: Father, help me to live my life in absolute trust because every Word is guaranteed by the precious blood of Jesus.
