“Study to shew thyself approved unto God , a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” – 2Timothy 2:15.(KJV)
The above scripture admonishes us to be diligent to present ourselves approved to God. In relating it to today’s bible reading in Matthew 13: 1-20 we can see that the seed is the Word and they are four categories of hearers that are differentiated by what they did with the Word. Three key words separated the outcome of the Word in their life. These are HEAR, RECEIVE and UNDERSTAND.
We are sustained and fruitful by hearing the Word of God, receive it and carrying out diligent study to gain understanding (Romans 10:17). Our walk with God must go beyond hearing and receiving the Word to diligent study of the Word in order to make us properly equipped to withstand the storms of life and resist the choking of the care of this world and deceitfulness of riches.
When we hear the Word, receive it and engaged in diligent study it results in understanding which makes us approved unto God. Our approval unto God will come in the form of fruitfulness (both in increased knowledge of the Word and winning souls to Christ), signs and wonders with divers miracle performed by God through us. Understanding of the Word enables us to exhibit confidence and strength in the face of challenges of life.
It is therefore required of us to diligently study the Word of God, because these exceedingly great and precious promises establishes our divinity in Christ – 2 Peter 1:3-4
