Topic: Who are your family members?
Bible Reading: Judges 6-7; Luke 8:1-21
Memory Verse: “And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.” Luke 8:21 (KJV)
The Lord Jesus was teaching the multitude that gathered together to listen to Him when His mother and brothers came looking for Him. The crowd was so much that they could not reach Him. Some of those who were there recognized His mother and relayed the message to Him in Luke 8:20 (KJV), “And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.” His response as stated in the following verse is quite instructive. “And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.” (Luke 8:21 KJV). This means the believers are His family. Thus, while not neglecting the blood family, the true Christians should be treated as your kith and kin.
What does this imply? It means treating the believers the same way you will treat your blood brothers. This is not for just the men of God in authority over you but treating all true believers as your brethren! So when a believer around you lacks anything, you are expected to respond to him the way you will respond to your immediate blood family member. Doing this shows your love for God as He is the father of all true believers. That’s why Apostle Paul states in Galatians 6:9-10 (KJV), “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. [10] As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
This is the basis of true Christianity. This is well reiterated in the second commandment as stated in Mark 12:31 (KJV), “And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”
So please show love to all your Christian brothers and sisters by meeting their needs with what you have. It doesn’t have to be financial; it could be time, knowledge, sharing experience, providing clothes, interceding for them or other physical, mental, social or spiritual needs. Let us show love to all those around us as true disciples of our God! 1 John 4:8 (KJV) says, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” When we show love this way, we will attract more people to the kingdom of God as action speaks louder than voice!
Prayer point:
Father, help me to show love to all around me like Jesus Christ.
