Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 6:1-12
“All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled” – Ecclesiastes 6:7 (KJV).
It is amazing how people labour from day to day and week to week with little or no time to rest. While hardwork is commendable, the labour of man could be futile, leaving him without a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment if Christ is not at the centre of such life. Man’s labour could weary him where there is no commensurate reward for such labour.
Nothing else truly satisfies outside Christ. The reason is that human’s want is insatiable because there is a down side to everything in life. Man can only find true satisfaction in an intimate father-son relationship with God.
There is a void in every man that money, food, pleasure, clothing, homes or cars cannot fill. The rich will labour to get richer why the poor will labour more to meet his needs but the end of all this labour is dissatisfaction. None of the rewards of physical labour and strivings can lead to rest. True rest and satisfaction is only in Jesus. The scripture admonishes, “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief” – Hebrews 4:11 (KJV).
This labour that results in rest and true satisfaction is faith in the finished work of Christ as opposed to the physical labour that leads to weariness and exhaustion.
PRAYER: May God grant us faith to rest in Christ finished work.
