Bible Reading: Jeremiah 34, 35, 36; Hebrews 2.
“Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? saith the LORD” – Jeremiah 35:13 (KJV).
You will always find young people who at the point of applying for undergraduate admission want to go far away from home to study. Many times I have heard people say that they need to go away from the watchful eyes of their parents. They want to be free, to do whatever they want. I remember a girl whose parents brought her to school, pastors they were, I remember that this girl got pregnant before the end of her first year. She like most, had wanted freedom and gotten it. She had rejected her parents’ instructions.
In today’s passage, God sends Jeremiah to ask the people of Judah to harken unto his words and instructions like the Rechabites who had harkened unto the words of their father Jonadab. The Rechabites were careful to obey their forefathers’ instructions even many years after the instructions were given. They had never allowed themselves to be swayed. These people did not reject wise counsel. God is requiring the same from us.
We must be like the Rechabites, we must heed the Lord’s instructions all the days of our life’s and commit the same instructions to be heeded by those around us. The world today is full of contrary instructions, we must not neglect the age-old wisdom of God for contemporary unholy ideas. We must remain steadfast like the Rechabites. Can God be proud of you this way?
