DAILY BIBLE READING: Jeremiah 34, 35, 36; Hebrews 2
“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip” Hebrews 2:1 (KJV)
Life is a journey which needs uncountable instructions to navigate, partly from the people that we come in contact with on daily basis but most importantly from the Most High God. He has the full details of life in His Hands and He is always willing that we rely on Him for success. The pit of life has swallowed up many people simply because they refused to give attention. The story was told of a young man who died suddenly because he failed to keep to the instruction that guided the operation of a digital moulder. He was not meant to go in for cleaning whenever the machine is in operation or if he was to, a button is to be pressed which would automatically bring the machine to a halt. Neither was explored and unfortunately he entered in without the knowledge of anybody so the man lost his life because the machine pressed him hard before the operator could gain consciousness, the irreversible had happened!
The writer of Hebrews tried as much as possible to remind his audience of the need to pay attention to what they have heard. The importance of this cannot be overemphasised. Any Christian who would succeed on this journey should make sure that lip service is not paid to the instructions he/she has heard. If we are handling with levity the weighty instructions on righteousness, godliness, love, evangelism, restitution, etc. It is very dangerous and could birth damning consequence. When we are carefree with what we have heard, it could lead to slipping away of those truths and of ourselves as well.
It is very important to think deeply over what you have heard and seen whether those things still make meaning to you now as they were at the beginning. If there is a shift in attention and focus, we make ourselves endangered species. Note that there is consequence if we turn away. The Scripture provides the warning to us so as not to travel that route of perdition. Hear the Scripture: “For if the message spoken by angels was binding and every disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation, which was first announced by the Lord and confirmed to us by those who heard him” v. 2 (NIV)
Friends, how often do you give careful, earnest attention to the word of God that comes to you from the radio, internet, TV, pulpit or the one that you read yourself? Are you among those who always think that with this my status, I cannot… what you neglect today, you shall later confront tomorrow when you stand before the throne of judgment. I encourage you to give attention to the word of God. It is only the Word that can help you on this journey.
Prayer: Lord, I receive Your grace to give attention to details from Your Word
