Bible Reading: Proverbs 17-18; 2 Corinthians 2
Memory verse: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)
The name of the LORD is the priority of heaven. When Jesus gave taught us prayer He started it this way, “…Our Father which art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name” Matthew 6:9 (KJV). Heaven prioritizes God’s name above all because they know the importance of the name and what it stands for. God’s name stand for all that He is; it carries His identity and reputation.
Our memory verse says, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” A tower in biblical times is a physical structure that is high and tall. It is strong because people could run to it when facing danger and then find safety and protection. Towers were built then to protect crops, roads, and cities. They were used to watch over a landowner’s fields and militarily in defense of a city. Watchmen stood in towers, armed and ready to sound the alarm if enemies threatened their territory. The more towers a city had, the stronger the city is thought to be.
Towers remind everyone in the city that someone is constantly watching out for their safety as they went about their work, leaving them feeling secured especially that people could run to them when danger comes. The name of God is the strong tower we have today. He uses His name specifically to differentiate Him from others who claim to be gods. God’s name is high as a tower compared to every other name. Psalm 148:13 tells us, “let them praise the name of the LORD because his name is high above all others. His glory is above heaven and earth.”
The name of the LORD is a strong tower when we are scared, ill, lost, confused, sad, threatened, weak, overwhelmed, down, struggling, etc, His name is the only place we run to and is safe. His name, therefore, is a spiritual location where a certain set of people can run to in times listed above. Only the ‘righteous’ can run into this strong tower and gets protection. The righteous is one in right standing with God and since it is a spiritual location only with faith can we run into it.
To be among the righteous who can run into the name of the LORD which is a strong tower, you must start by giving your life to Jesus Christ by confessing your sins and accepting His death and resurrection and cleansing of your sins by His blood on the cross. Only then can you be among the righteous qualified to run into the strong tower.
