Bible reading; Genesis 27, Malachi 1
Yet I have loved Jacob but Esau I have hated – Malachi 1:2-3. (Paraphrased)
During the birth of Esau and Jacob, God told Rebekah that the elder would serve the younger. It was made clear there that God’s plan was for Jacob to be the covenant head of the household succeeding Isaac. We also saw in that passage; Jacob’s gaining of the birthright from the worldly-minded Esau. So even in the early encounters between these two brothers, it was clear that God had something special in view for Jacob.
In our text , we saw that the proclamations which God made at the birth of Esau and Jacob came to pass in a most surprising way. Isaac is going to oppose God’s word with all his might. Rebekah and Jacob are going to sully God’s word with their scheming. This is God’s word. “Heaven and earth shall pass a way, not one dot of His word will ever be put to the ground”
Isaac had made plans to bless Esau. Soon the plan was interrupted by Rebekah’s plans to see that Jacob is blessed rather. God’s plan is fulfilled in spite of Isaac’s plans and Rebekah’s wicked scheme.
Therefore, the big difference between Jacob and Esau was not that Jacob was a righteous man and Esau wasn’t. It was that God, for some inexplicable and undeserved purpose, had set His love on Jacob. And that love eventually transformed him into a man of God. This is Grace, the covenant of grace, the unmerited favour of God at play.
It was the grace and the blessing of God that made the difference between Jacob and Esau, and this is the undeserved blessing of the covenant of grace. At the very instant of grace in the life of a man, his making is accelerated.
God’s hand was simply upon Jacob. He was God’s choice. That is the election of grace, which stands not by works, but by the will of God. It’s awesome. And God’s love and grace in Jacob’s life changed his life. God does not need our help to fulfill His plans in us, we just need to walk in His plans and purpose. The cure to curses is being under the blessing. As you go through this day under the blessings of God, I see every curse hanging upon your life and destiny destroyed in the name of Jesus.
Prayer:
Father, help me to obey and walk in your plans for me in my life.
